Important information for all students applying to the GEMS program this summer!
• There is no deadline for the GEMS application.
• The essay is part of the application and should be submitted online.
• GEMS sites have variable assignment dates, but the internship awards will likely be assigned yearly in April. Do not be concerned if you have not received your assignment prior to April.

1. The application includes an area for a 500 word essay which should be about why the student wants to be in the GEMS program. Please approach this with thought and refection before you begin your application so you have an idea as to what you would like to write:
Beginning GEMS applicants are strongly encouraged to write an essay (not required for WRAIR).
Intermediate GEMS applicants must write a 250-500 word essay to be considered for acceptance.
Advanced GEMS applicants must write this essay to be considered for acceptance (WRAIR only).
2. The GEMS application also includes sections that ask the applicant to describe their career and academic interests.
  3. There are several GEMS sessions this summer across the country. The application will ask that you choose your first preference of a week to attend and a second choice. You will be assigned your first choice ONLY if there is adequate space in that session.
    4. Getting your application in as early as possible helps ensure that you get your first choice, although there is no deadline for the GEMS application process. To see a list of weeks offered by each GEMS location for the Summer 2008 program, click here.
