The university REAP Director works directly with local schools to identify appropriate students through an application process, and endorsement from the local high school science directors and/or guidance counselors, who also encourage them to participate. Applicants (apprentices) are high-school students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, with juniors being the predominant participating grade level.

Application deadline: Grants are placed in February, providing funding is in place from ARO, with the apprenticeships commencing in June through September depending upon the research facility. Cut-off date for applying is April 15, 2008.
