eCYBERMISSION is a virtual STEM competition for 6th to 9th grade students that promotes teamwork, self-discovery, and the real-life applications of STEM. Students work in teams of two to four, led by an adult Team Advisor, to select a problem in their community to investigate with science or solve with engineering. Throughout the competition, students work on team building and interact with STEM professionals while competing for state, regional, and national awards in the form of savings bonds.
The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is a DoD-sponsored STEM program (U.S. Office of the Secretary of the Defense and the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force) which promotes original research and experimentation in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics at the high school level and publicly recognizes students for outstanding achievement. By connecting talented students, their teachers, and research professionals at affiliated symposia and by rewarding research excellence, JSHS aims to widen the pool of trained talent prepared to conduct research and development vital to our nation.
JSHS regional and national symposia are held during the academic year and reach more than 8,000 high school students and teachers throughout the United States; all U.S. Territories (including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Marshall Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands); and the Department of Defense Schools in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Puerto Rico. Students must first participate in one of 49 regional symposia, where they compete for selection to present at the National JSHS each year.
JSHS is administered by the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA).
The DoD SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program provides students with a full STEM scholarship, internships, and guaranteed placement at a DoD lab or facility upon graduation. SMART funds bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degrees in critical STEM disciplines. The application is available online from August through December of every year. Students pursuing degrees related to engineering, science, mathematics, architecture, oceanography and operations research are encouraged to apply. Visit the SMART website for a full list of eligibility requirements and STEM disciplines.
The NDSEG Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of 15 supported STEM disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance).
The AEOP Technical Symposia Travel Award is designed to encourage AEOP program participants and alumni to engage in scientific meetings/technical symposia to showcase their STEM research. Participation in scientific meetings/technical symposia will expand and enrich current AEOP students’ educational experiences by interacting and networking with STEM professionals in the field, exploring a variety of STEM disciplines and careers, gaining experience in communicating their research accomplishments, and serving as AEOP ambassadors. Additionally, it will provide AEOP alumni to reconnect with AEOP, present their current research or research conducted while with AEOP at technical symposia.
