I am a sophomore in high school in Georgia. I participated in the Virginia State University Apprenticeship virtually during the summer of 2021. I am now part of the 2022 AEOP Alumni Council.
What AEOP program(s) did you participate in?
AEOP High School Apprenticeship
Words of Advice?
I hope that future AEOP participants realize and take advantage of the amazing opportunity to engage with professionals and build interest in the STEM field.
Best Things about the Program?
Some of the best things about my summer apprenticeship were the one-on-one communication between my mentor and me as well as the complete immersion into the program. I was not only able to discuss the statistical analysis portions of the project with my mentor, but I sat in on summer camps and built relations with VSU faculty and other personnel.
How Participating in AEOP Inspired You to Advance in the STEM Field?
Participating in AEOP allowed me to expand my realization of how important the STEM field is. It is extremely applicable to any and all operations. In my apprenticeship, I connected the drafting of grant requests to the act of performing statistical analysis on raw data. I put together reports after attending VSU summer camps. I realized how fundamentally crucial STEM is to a successful operation, whether it be running a company or analyzing camp interest. This is what really pushed me to continue to advance in the STEM field.
Who is your favorite STEM role model?
I look up to Elon Musk because, after success in the field, he continues advancing. He works harder to grow the window of opportunity that STEM opens.
